First of all, thank you all for supporting our Matariki evening last Thursday night. We ran out of sausages on the BBQ which is always a good sign that there were heaps of people coming into the school! It’s always great to see the Gleniti School Community getting in and supporting our events .. which essentially are your events! We enjoy putting them on, and the excitement levels around the school on the day of our Matariki night were very high. Of course we were all celebrating Matariki together in a uniquely kiwi way!

Congratulations to our Kapa Haka group who played such an important role in the night. Great effort all round!

Congratulations also to our Cross Country Team who competed in the South Canterbury Cross Country event out at Waihi School last Thursday. For the record in the team event our Year 7 Team came 1st; our Year 8 and Year 5 Boys came 2nd; and our Year 7 Boys Team came 3rd. Wow! Great effort by everyone involved.

Today we see three of our Jump Jam teams away competing at the annual Jump Jam competition held at the Theatre Royal. Best of luck to our teams; Year 7-8 Gleniti Lightning; Year 4-6 Gleniti Rebels; and Year 1-4 Gleniti Rockers.

Congratulations to our Yr7&8 Basketballers. The Gleniti Supersonics beat Bluestone to finish 3rd in the year 7/8 boys ‘A’ grade winning 39-34. Liam James scored 22 points with Rowan Waller 7.

Well done to Liam, Rowan, Layton Koning, Jaemin An and Sunny Chen for making the South Canterbury U13 team this year. In the girls grade congratulations to Molly Fitzgerald for making the South Canterbury U13 A team and Sam Giddings, Mia Donaldson and Nadia van den Bosch for making the South Canterbury U13 B team.

Finally I hope everyone is excited about our Wig Mufti Day tomorrow. The School Council are running this mufti day to raise funds for the Child Cancer Society. If you can’t find a wig or a hat then normal mufti is fine. As usual a gold coin donation thanks J

Congratulations to those who received Principal Awards at the assembly last week.

Tomorrow night the school will be celebrating Matariki. We’ll be hosting our Matariki event here at school from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Come along and hear our Kapa Haka group perform, learn more about Matariki, and enjoy the artwork on display in our classrooms. Believe it or not, the weather forecast for tomorrow evening is looking pretty good. There will be BBQ sausies for sale, and the PTA will be running a hot drinks stall. The Kapa Haka will be performing from 6:30pm. This is a great opportunity to celebrate something that is uniquely Kiwi, so come along and celebrate Matariki with us.

Further to this, as part of Matariki we were very lucky to host Glenview Kindergarten today at school. Our Kapa Haka group performed some great songs, which we will post on our Facebook page. The children from Glenview Kindy also performed for us, as you can see by our Newsletter cover! What great performers they all are!

The Primary Teachers Union, the NZEI, will be running a Paid Union Meeting during the afternoon next Friday, 22nd June. The school will be open as normal, however we will be running an alternate programme for our students as most of our teachers will be attending the meeting. Parents are more than welcome to pick their children up early at lunchtime on the 22nd June. Please let the office know if you plan to do this. This will then help us with our planning for the afternoon.

Congratulations to those who received Principal Awards at the assembly last week.

Wow, weren’t we lucky with the weather yesterday for our Yr 0-4 Cross Country event! And what a great turn out of parents and whanau who came along to support all the children running. Most importantly what a great event! The children ran superbly, and looked as though they were enjoying themselves. Thank you to Nic Parmenter for organising the day for us. Great effort all round.

Last week our Yr 8 Leaders spent a night away in Christchurch. On Tuesday they worked with the YMCA on Leadership skills and spent the afternoon on the amazing climbing wall at the YMCA. On Wednesday they went along to the Horncastle Arena as part of the Young Leaders Conference. There were children from all around the South Island at the event, listening to keynote speakers such as Lisa Tamati, Amanda Wilson and Riley Hathaway. These speakers spoke of the success and failures in their lives and what they believe are the keys to being great leaders. Very inspirational for our young leaders.

Next Thursday night the school will be celebrating Matariki. The school will be open from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Come along and hear our Kapa Haka group perform, learn more about Matariki, and enjoy the artwork on display in our classrooms. We are also hopeful that we will have some telescopes available so that we can enjoy the wonders of the night sky. Come along and be inspired!
