Kapa Haka Leadership / Job Opportunity: Timaru Schools Cluster
The Timaru Schools Cluster is seeking two passionate individuals to lead and deliver an exciting new regional Out of Hours Music and Art (OOHMA) Kapa Haka programme. This 300-hour project focuses on building ākonga / student excellence and kaiako / teacher capacity across our takiwā / region.
Working in partnership with Te Kāhui Mātauranga ki Arowhenua, these roles will combine central weekly tuition with a rotation of kura / school visits.
Role 1: OOHMA Coordinator / Facilitator
Role Purpose: To provide strategic leadership and administrative oversight for the regional programme.
- Key Tasks: Oversee the programme, liaise with mana whenua, design the regional delivery schedule, and oversee the creation / selection of an online kapa haka video resource for kura / schools.
- Hours: 2–4 hours per week (timesheet-based).
- Remuneration: Grade 2 – $36.27 per hour.
- Contract: Fixed-term, Term 2 Week 2 (4 May 2026) to Term 4 Week 3 (30 October 2026).
Role 2: Kapa Haka Tutor
Role Purpose: To deliver high-quality Kapa Haka tuition to Year 1–8 ākonga / students and mentor kaiako / teachers to build long-term in-school capacity.
- Key Tasks: Lead weekly central school hub sessions and travel to cluster kura / schools on rotation. You will create or curate Ngāi Tahu digital resources to support kaiako / teachers and prepare groups, with a view to building in-school capacity and preparing for the ‘ihi’ of the FLAVA Festival stage.
- Hours: 10 hours per week (inclusive of travel time).
- Remuneration: Step 1 – $35.52 per hour (Step 2 – $46.52 available with verified 200+ hours of previous OOHMA tutoring).
- Contract: Fixed-term, Term 2 Week 2 (4 May 2026) to Term 4 Week 3 (30 October 2026).
Successful applicants must undergo safety checking as per the Children’s Act 2014. Content must reflect local Ngāi Tahu identity and stories as endorsed by mana whenua.
