Newsletter 12th December, 2018

Well here we are! Virtually at the end of the school year! Where has the year gone? This will be our final newsletter of the year.

It’s certainly been an eventful year full of highlights. We’ve seen buildings arrive and classrooms upgraded. But the major highlights for me have included our Kapahaka performing at the Flava festival for the first time, the Matariki evening when we saw a huge turnout of our community come along to celebrate the event, the Great Gleniti Gala in the first term, and the Colour walk/run fundraiser in the third term. All were great events that encouraged our children to get involved with their community.

As always there are plenty of people to thank. Suffice to say the school can’t be the success it is without the on-going support of a whole heap of people. Thank you all!

On Monday we celebrated our Year 8 Leavers with our annual Year 8 Leavers dinner. Ex-Gleniti student Emma Brown inspired us with her leadership talk. It’s always great to listen to past Gleniti students and hear about their thoughts, plans and aspirations. Thank you again to the PTA who organised such a successful evening. Our cover stars are all from the Year 8 dinner J

The good news continued on Tuesday evening when the Basketball season came to a close. The Gleniti Stars came 3rd in the Girls B Grade. As did the Gleniti Thunder in the Boys B Grade. The Gleniti Heat played fabulously in their A grade final against St Josephs, losing the game literally in the last minute. They produced a valiant effort and can be very proud of the way that they all played.

The good news continued in the Boys B grade final with the Gleniti Warriors beating the Barton Rural Jets 21-10. Well done boys! What a fabulous result.

A huge thank you to all Coaches, Managers and supporters of our teams. As usual we couldn’t have done it without you.

Can all singlets please be returned to the office before the end of the term, except for those students who are still using them to play touch rugby.

The final event of the year of course is the End of Year Celebration which will be held at the Southern Trust Events Centre on Morgans Road from 6:30pm on Monday 17th December. The event begins on the dot at 6:30pm and we ask that all children are seated by 6:15pm thankyou. As usual children are asked to wear their uniform unless told otherwize by their teacher. The event is normally over by about 7:45pm.

School officially closes for the year at midday (12pm) on Tuesday. Tuesday is traditionally a tidy up day.

Congratulations to all those who received Principal Awards at our assembly last week.

Our cover stars this weeks are all the students who participated in the 800m run as part of our curtailed athletics sports. All through last week Nic Parmenter ran athletics events here at school in a quest to put together a Gleniti team to compete at the South Canterbury Athletics day on Tuesday. On Monday we had a break in the weather and were able to take nearly 70 children down to the track and run our sprints, 200m and 800m races. Phew! What a mission! Thank you Nic for the great work that you did in organising all of this.

Yesterday we were able to take a Gleniti team to the South Canterbury’s. All of our children competed exceptionally well. We placed in over a dozen different events and broke a South Canterbury record in the U9 relay. Detailed results in next weeks newsletter!

Over the last few days we have been running a School Transport Travel display at school. It has been great talking to parents and whanau about the issues that they see when transporting their children to school. As a result we have two prezzy cards to give out, and the winners will be announced early next week J

Congratulations to Pippa Davies who competed so well at the recent Dance Barre Jazz dancing competiton. Pippa received the Top Student Overall award for 2018. What a great achievement J

Newsletter 28th November, 2018

And the rain continues to fall! It certainly has been a very soggy couple of weeks and this has affected lots of different events in the school. In particular it has meant that we haven’t been able to run our athletic sports. With the South Canterbury Athletic Sports due next week (weather dependent!) we’ve been frantically trying to run championship like events here at school in a quest to select a Gleniti team to go the South Canterbury events. Nic Parmenter has been running this, but the weather has been very frustrating!

Keep an eye out for our School Transport Travel display tomorrow. Jane Sullivan, School Travel Plan Coordinator from Community & Public Health, is setting up a display outside the admin area early tomorrow afternoon. We have two $50 Prezzy cards as prizes to get everyone involved. There’s a quiz for people to fill in to help you “interact” with the display that is specifically designed to get parents and whanau talking about how we all transport our children to and from school. It’ll be well worth your time to take a look!

The end of the year seems to be careering towards us at an unbelievable speed. There’s always so much to do and finalise in these last few weeks. Some key dates to put in your diary as we head into the final straight!
