Enrolment Zone FAQ’s

So where is the zone?

Please find below a copy of the map of our Enrolment Zone. What will probably strike you as unusual is the fact that it extends all the way out into the country to Cliffs Road. As a Board of Trustees we argued that we didn’t want or need the zone to go out that far. Once upon a time Gleniti School was a rural school … back in the 1940s …. but not now! The boundaries of this zone are the Ministry of Education’s determination … even after our consultation process. The zone follows the boundary of another Ministry thing called the TEZ. This is the Transport Entitlement Zone. The Ministry’s argument is that the enrolment zone and the TEZ should be the same, which does make sense in that the TEZ is actually a transport funding device. If they weren’t the same then people could be entitled to transport assistance to a school that they weren’t allowed to attend due to an enrolment zone.

On the other side of the zone map we have a very defined line of Mountain View Road as the boundary. This includes both sides of the road, so there should be no confusion there.

The Enrolment Scheme home zone has been drawn so that it includes the whole land parcels of addresses on the scheme’s boundary roads.

Home Zone Description

The Enrolment Scheme takes addresses on both sides of the boundary roads mentioned in the description unless otherwise stated.

Starting from the intersection of Mountain View Road and Wai-iti Road, the home zone follows;

  • West on Wai-iti Road until Claremont Road (including Oak Place and Rowan Place)
  • West on Claremont Road until Brockley Road
  • North-East on Brockley Road until Hadlow Road
  • West on Hadlow Road until Cliffs Road
  • North on Cliffs Road until Fraser Road (including down to 1088 Rolling Ridges Road, Sutherlands Road down to number 814, and Taiko Hall Road)
  • South-East on Fraser Road until Brockley Road (including down to 92 Fraser Road)
  • South-East on Brockleys Road until Hadlow Road (including down to 488 Spur Road)
  • East on Hadlow Road until Pages Road (including Gladstone Road)
  • East on Pages Road until Mountain View Road (including Oakwood Road)
  • South on Mountain View Road until Wai-iti Road

What if I live out of the zone now but my children already attend Gleniti School?

Nothing happens, you continue to enjoy the right to send your child/ren to Gleniti School. Nothing changes for you or your family.

What if I live out of the zone and my children already attend the school, but we have a sibling due to start school in 2017?

This is where it can get confusing, and can be unsettling and distressing. Potentially your sibling might not be able to attend Gleniti School, that is true. But we certainly don’t want to be in a position where the enrolment zone splits families up. One of the key touchstones of our new Charter is all about Whanau/Family … so splitting families isn’t something we want to do.

There is a very defined process for the school to follow in these circumstances. These steps are mandated by the Ministry of Education and we are required to follow these fully.

In these circumstances the Gleniti Board of Trustees has to determine how many “out of zone” places are available in the school for the next current period. This announcement is likely to be in the Timaru Herald on September 9th. This initial announcement will be for the rest of 2017 only. There will be advertised announcements about 2018 later on in Term 4 when the school has a better idea about how many placements are available.

So September 9th is important for families of new siblings to be aware of.

The next step is that once all the applications for placements arrive (and there will be a definite cut off date), if the number of applications exceeds the number of placements on offer, then a priority list determines who is offered a place.

What is the priority list?

Applications for enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority (again these are determined by the Ministry of Education, not the school):

  1. First Priority must be given to students who have been accepted in special programmes run by the school already approved by the Secretary of Education. In Gleniti’s case, we don’t have any special programmes approved. This means that this priority doesn’t actual come into force for Gleniti.
  2. Second priority must be given to applicants who are siblings of current students. It is therefore vitally important that we know if you have siblings in your family about to start at Gleniti School.
  3. Third priority must be given to applicants who are siblings of former students.
  4. Fourth priority must be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school.
  5. Fifth priority must be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the board of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school.
  6. Sixth priority must be given to all other applicants.

Why doesn’t the school know now about the placements available for 2018?

Because families come and go all the time. It’s therefore hard to predict this far out about how things look roll wise for 2018. We know of some definite numbers, such as how many Yr 8 students are leaving, but we can’t predict exact numbers.

So how do we apply if we are out of zone?

We have a very simple form at the school office for you to fill in prior to the cut off date. Please don’t presume that because you already have an enrolment form with us for 2017 that this will suffice.
